The sheer size of most farm vehicles and equipment can make them a challenge to back up, which can prove dangerous for others working in the area. To help prevent runovers, employers and supervisors should make sure anyone who operates farm equipment is familiar with the following safety protocols.
When appropriate, operators should roll down windows or open vehicle doors so they can hear if their fellow workers call out, and vice versa. When noise or distance is involved, workers should use hand signals, not vocal commands, to communicate.
To make sure drivers can see properly, keep windshields, mirrors and cab windows clean at all times. Another worker should also serve as an extra set of eyes outside the cab.
